PDGA: A Look at the Top Five Women Disc Golf Pros in the World

There are currently 236 PDGA rated professional women disc golfers in the world, compared to 3,328 men. Though the women's number grew by 16 over the last two months, there is still a long way to go. Disc golf is one of the best sports for women, with women's leagues popping up all over the nation. It's easy to learn and inexpensive to play, we just need to get the word out and invite female friends and family to try out this fun sport.

In the meantime, there are some awesome women disc golfers who are ranked the best in the world. Here is a look at the top five rated PDGA women in the world, and their career in 2011.

Valarie Jenkins

Jenkins is a household name in the world of disc golf, and grew up in a family who was already addicted to the sport. They traveled around the country playing in disc golf tournaments, and brother Avery is also a top disc golf professional.

Jenkins is rated the number one woman in the world, and now calls Capitola, California home. She was the winner of the PDGA Championship in Appling, Georgia last month as well as the United States Women's Disc Golf Championships in Round Rock, Texas. Jenkins was also crowned champion at the European Open in Finland back in July, along with several other victories in 2011.

On the "About Me" section of her web site, she says she could "live on Slushies and Rice Krispie treats." Yum. She also loves the "Food Network," and her favorite quote is, "Live every day like it's your last." Definitely a good motto to live by.

Sarah Stanhope

She is from San Antonio, Texas, and says that one of her best moments in the sport was getting to play on the home course of Val Jenkins, and then actually getting to compete alongside her and some of the other top women disc golfers.

Lopez placed third at the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships in California, and second at the U.S. Women's Disc Golf Championships. She captured a victory in the Four States Open and several other prestigious tournaments this year.

Sarah Hokum

Hokum has also had an exceptional 2011, and she is rated the fourth best woman professional disc golfer in the world. She placed third at the PDGA Championship in Georgia and fifth in the U.S. Women's Disc Golf Championships. She had a victory in the Vibram Open at Maple Hill in Massachusetts after battling it out with Stanhope, winning by just a stroke.

Paige Pierce

'Field of Dreams' property in Iowa sold

The sprawling eastern Iowa cornfields made famous by the movie "Field of Dreams" are being sold to a company that will preserve the site's baseball legacy, the owners announced Sunday.

Don and Becky Lansing said they have accepted an offer from Mike and Denise Stillman and their company, Go the Distance Baseball LLC, which will develop the site near Dyersville as a baseball and softball complex. A purchase price was not disclosed.

"We worked hard to maintain its wholesome allure, and our success says a lot about our nation's love affair with its national pastime," Becky Lansing said in a statement. "It truly is a special place."

The land has been in Don Lansing's family since 1906. The couple put the property up for sale at $5.4 million in May 2010.,new style fendi handbags, The parcel includes the two-bedroom house, baseball diamond, six other buildings and 193 acres -- mostly cornfields -- from the movie.

The Lansings said earlier this year that they had gotten several inquiries about the site but were committed to finding a buyer that would preserve its legacy.

As for the Lansings, they'll live a few miles away and make visits to the site, "especially in summer when the corn is high. That's when the field is most magical," Don Lansing said.
